    James Madison Teaching Kitchen

Providing engaging experiences for students is central to JMU, a university that strongly believes success requires equal parts intellect and action. Reaching past theory and books, JMU strives to offer hands on learning experiences by drawing from the outside world.

Originally a fit out for an existing gym, this space was developed into JMU’s Teaching Kitchen which incorporates a well lit demonstration area giving students ample space to learn as well as present their work. A contemporary six station lab provides equipped learning areas separated by low walls for the purpose of keeping teams of students well grouped. Available to the students are six stainless steel professional stove ranges, sizeable refrigerators and quality kitchen tools creating a learning environment designed for success.

  • James Madison University A2

    James Madison University A2

JMU asked for our help in combining and relocating four independent departments into one existing multi-story story building, in effort to achieve adequate accommodations for faculty and staff consisting of meeting rooms, offices, collaboration areas, and a conference room. For students, classrooms, labs, study and project rooms as well as support functions, equipment rooms, storage areas, and break rooms.

After meetings with JMU representatives from all departments, a detailed program of spaces and functions was created, including any special requests and utilities, as well as room adjacencies. Those in turn were plotted over four floors of the building and adjusted until all-user consensus was reached. The detailed construction drawings for all disciplines were prepared and construction was divided into three phases, each performed within a very narrow time frame. Created spaces are versatile, multifunctional and flexible, while meeting each department’s spatial needs and showcasing their uniqueness.

  • Halstead New England Innovation and Design Center

Halstead New England Innovation and Design Center

LDDBlueline wwas selected to provide full architectural, interior design, and coordination of engineering services as well as Green Globes coordination for this new construction and renovation project. The Design Center now houses a multipurpose showroom/training room for approximately 50 to 60 people, a 20-person call center, video conference room, offices, lobby/reception area, support spaces, and storage.

The Owner’s corporate philosophy encouraged the design of this building to meet energy efficient Green Globes criteria. Maximizing the use of glass, the building’s Lobby incorporates a living plant wall that provides a backdrop to showcase multiple art pieces. Programmatically, the building had to function both for staff and guests that were invited to training events hosted by the company.
