  • James Madison Hartman Hall Boardroom

    James Madison Hartman Hall Boardroom

Hartman Hall, home to the College of Business, sits with outstretched arms at the southwest entrance to James Madison University’s campus in Harrisonburg, VA. Faculty, staff, and visitors to the building are greeted by the breathtaking, three-story, oval-shaped atrium as they enter. Ascending the atrium’s wood paneled staircase to the 3rd floor, visitors discover the Hogan Boardroom which serves as both a meeting space and event venue for prestigious gatherings throughout the year. Despite the room’s high status, the plain walls and uninviting wood entry doors failed to match the luster of the surrounding building.

LDDBlueline™ was brought in to assess the Boardroom’s uses and to provide functional solutions that would elevate the room’s aesthetic and create a suitable space for such distinguished events. We embraced this task by providing meticulously detailed drawings that ensured the new wood paneling on the walls perfectly matched the wood paneling in the atrium, we created a hidden set of doors to keep the coat closet out of sight when not in use, and we revamped the Boardroom’s entry with a new set of glass doors which better emphasized the college’s focus on transparency. Lastly, we designed a display of glass shelves hanging in front of wooden slats that matched the existing boardroom table with gold mirror positioned to capture and spread the light from the large windows on the far side of the room.

Providing engaging experiences for students is central to JMU, a university that strongly believes success requires equal parts intellect and action. Reaching past theory and books, JMU strives to offer hands on learning experiences by drawing from the outside world.

A contemporary six station lab provides equipped learning areas separated by low walls for the purpose of keeping teams of students well grouped. Available to the students are six stainless steel professional stove ranges, sizeable refrigerators and quality kitchen tools creating a learning environment designed for success.

  • James Madison University A2

    James Madison University A2

JMU asked for our help in combining and relocating four independent departments into one existing multi-story story building, in effort to achieve adequate accommodations for faculty and staff consisting of meeting rooms, offices, collaboration areas, and a conference room. For students, classrooms, labs, study and project rooms as well as support functions, equipment rooms, storage areas, and break rooms.

After meetings with JMU representatives from all departments, a detailed program of spaces and functions was created, including any special requests and utilities, as well as room adjacencies. Those in turn were plotted over four floors of the building and adjusted until all-user consensus was reached. The detailed construction drawings for all disciplines were prepared and construction was divided into three phases, each performed within a very narrow time frame. Created spaces are versatile, multifunctional and flexible, while meeting each department’s spatial needs and showcasing their uniqueness.
